Basic How to Print

  1. Download and Install the Software Cura Ultimaker Edition (Linux, macOS, PC)
  2. Configure the Software
    • Launch Cura Ultimaker Edition. Begin the Configuration Wizard to select your machine and under “Ultimaker” select Ultimaker 2+.
    • Click Add Printer > to complete the Configuration Wizard. Cura Ultimaker Edition is now ready for use.  

  3. Load Model File 
    • Select the STL/OBJ model you would like to print. Either drag your model's file into Cura or click on the Folder Icon (first icon, left hand side)  to 'Open File'. Once the file has been loaded, you will see a 3D rendering of your object on the build platform. Select the model to see the various options.
  4. Model Orientation
    • Move Icon - Move your model to change where it is printed on the build plate. Do this by clicking on the Move Icon (second icon, left hand side) and moving the modelt to the desired location. By holding down the right mouse button and dragging, you can view your model from different angles. (It is helpful to have an external mouse here.)
    • Scale - The Scale Icon (third icon, left hand side) displays the model dimensions, along with the ability to scale along the X Y or Z axes. In the left column change the model's size in millimeters. In the right column, change the model's size in percentages. Anything below 100% will reduce the objects size, while anything above 100% will increase the objects size. As a default, it will be set to uniform scaling. This will cause the X Y and Z axes to be scaled by the same amount when you make a change to any of them. To disable this, toggle off 'Uniform Scaling.' (If your model seems way too small try to scale it by >100%. Some models lack unit information if it was exported in mm but imported in inches this will fix the problem.)
    • Rotate The Rotate Icon (fourth icon, left hand side) will give you the ability to orient your model in along all three axes. Once you click the Rotate Icon, three circles will surround your model. The red circle will allow you to rotate around the Y-axis. The Green circle will rotate around the Z-axis. The Green circle will rotate around the X-axis. Cura defaults to 15 degree increments. Hold Shift to rotate by One Degree Increments.
      • Reset - The Reset button will return your model to the original orientation as defined by the CAD program used to create the model.
      • Lay Flat - The Lay Flat button will ensure that the flat portion of your print is securely attached to the bed. It is highly recommended to use this option after rotating your model in the Z direction, as it will help prevent potential adhesion issues during the print.
    • Mirror - The Mirror Icon (fifth icon, left hand side) will give you the ability to mirror your model about the X Y and Z axes. The red arrows will allow you to mirror, in both directions, about the Y-axis. The Green arrows will mirror about the Z-axis. The Green arrows will mirror about the X-axis. 
  5. Prepare Print File
    • In Cura, on the right side of the screen in Nozzle and Material select 0.6mm and PLA
    • In Profile, choose between Fine, Normal, or Extra Fine (See Print Settings Information for more details)
    • In Print Setup, there is an option between Recommend or Custom Profiles. Unless otherwise instructed, use the recommended setup menu: 
      • In Infill, choose the density (how solid) of the 3D Print. The more solid the print, the longer it will take. 
      • Check Generate Support (See Print Settings Information for more details)
      • Check Build Plate Adhesion (See Print Settings Information for more details)
  6. Printing from SD Card 
    • Load your model into Cura with the proper filament and profile selected. Next, insert the included SD card into your computer. In the bottom right hand corner, Select Save to SD Card Named '....' to save your GCODE file to your SD card. Safely eject the card from the computer, and insert it into the Ultimaker 2+.
    • Go to: Print > Desired File. The Ultimaker will then go through it’s automatic heating and extruding process before starting the print. This should take approximately 3 minutes.
  7. Removing Your First Print. After the print has finished, wait for the print surface to cool to the recommended print removal temperature. Your parts will be easier to remove if you allow your heated bed to cool down to optimal temperature. This will allow the plastic to contract, making it easier to remove. To remove the print slide a metrocard underneath the model and slowly pry the print off the bed. Do NOT use sharp tools to remove prints. 

Print Settings Information

    Print Speed and Quality

  • Extra Fine Profile Designed to give greater detail and finer objects. This will have a smaller layer height, which will make each layer thinner, so that curves seem more natural and walls seem less noticeable. This setting will also require more layers to be laid down, increasing overall print time. 
  • Fine Profile to give a balanced resolution by increasing the layer height 19 Cura Ultinaker Edition and print speeds. This will make the organic curves slightly more step-like than the fine setting, but it will reduce printing time. 
  • Normal Profile for the fast prints, where the overall model finish is not of concern. Most commonly used for quick iteration of designs when rapid prototyping.

   Printing Support Material

  • The Ultimaker 2+ printer is able to print models that have slight angles and overhangs, even without support material. This will depend on the overhang distance and angle of your particular model file. Turn this option on if your model could benefit from support material.

  Build Plate Adhesion (Brim)

  • Brim is used to increase surface area of the part you’re printing, thereby ensuring proper part adhesion. This will print a single layer high edge around the base of the part, helping first layer adhesion and minimizing warping.
